U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has ordered a review of the U.K.’s coal production and coal exports to curb carbon emissions, Reuters reports.
The move was welcomed by the U,S.
and European Union.
The U.KS. is the world’s second-largest coal producer, behind only China.
The move comes after Britain cut its coal production last year, and British coal prices fell more than 40 percent last year as investors began to see the impact of the slowdown in China.
The price drop has also impacted coal companies in the U., especially those with operations in the UK.
